Reason The more I learn about other cultures the more I realise that the evil committed by the catholic church is a drop in the ocean compared to what they do to more vulnerable people. Knowing what happens as a result of their cruelty in Ireland, and knowing that I have an incredible level of privilege, I realise the intense suffering that those vulnerable people go through is unconscionable.

Reason I don’t believe any of the stories the church teaches. I don’t believe the world was made in 7 days. I don’t believe in Adam and Eve, Moses parting the sea, Noah’s ark or any other stories. I don’t believe women are second class citizens. I don’t agree with they horrific treatment of women and children that happened in the Magdelene laundries. I don’t believe Paedophiles should be continuously protected. I definietly do not think the church who have continously allowed these things to happen and have done nothing to address it, have any right to talk to people about morality. I am a good, kind, loving, empathetic person. I teach my son to be the same.

Reason I do not believe in any God or Gods. I believe the Catholic church has committed terrible crimes particularly against women and children in this country. As a woman I do not want to be part of an organisation that regards me as second class because of my gender. I am not merely a vessel that can be sacrificed for more little Catholic foot soldiers. I believe that the church is centred on money, power and control and I resent the fact that they count me among their members when I absolutely am not. I believe in the total separation of church and state, secular democracy and no church influence, from any church, on state legislation or publicly funded hospitals and schools. I am NOT a Catholic and I have no wish to be counted as one. The fact that the Catholic church does not allow anyone to officially leave is breathtaking arrogance on their part.

Reason I haven’t believed in the existence of a deity since i was 14. but today i feel the need to officially renounce Catholicism. After the Tuam babies, mass rape and physical abuse of children, selling of babies to foreign couples without consent of parents, forcing my grandparents to put my mam up for adoption, and persecution of my LGBT friends, I have reached the end of my tether upon reading that bishops are telling people they have sinned for voting to repeal the 8th amendment. I want no part of this backward, patriarchal, bullying institution that has brought so much pain and suffering to people i love.

Reason I dont want to be counted as Catholic, I dont believe in original sin and I dont want to be associated with the hypocrisy, power hunger, mysogony, and child abuse and other crimes of this church. I am furious that my child is being denied the right to education because he is not baptised. Reason I resent it. I resent the lack of choice. I resent the sexism. I resent the lies: now and then. I resent the hidden, the overt, the manipulative, horrific treatment of women. I resent the sacrifices my mother made and the justifications she continues to make because her identity cannot be separated from a church who lied to her. I resent the lack of sex education. I resent the sexual abuse. I resent the limitations it put on my father, on his feelings, on his opportunities. I resent the person who my mother thought she had to be. I resent the questions my nieces have to ask about who this God could be when they watch the news and dead babies have been uncovered. I resent the fact that I am terrified to give birth to a child in my own country because if something goes wrong, I am not protected. I resent the fact that thousands of girls have had to travel alone or give birth alone or live alone.

Reason There are many reasons. I disagree with many actions that the church has publicly taken, and many opinions publicly voiced. But also, with everything that has been covered up by them that has come to the surface in more recent years. I also disagree with the hierarchy it insists upon and the patriarchal values it holds tightly too. I also wish to pursue and investigate other religious/philosophical beliefs and have not considered myself a Catholic for many many years.

Reason I think it is a disgrace that there is no official system to leave the church, should anyone wish to do so. I do not come from a religious family and have never been made go to church or say prayers. I was signed up to this religion for one purpose only: in order to get a place local primary school. I do not believe in god, and even if I did, I would still wish to leave the Catholic Church. Anyone who can happily ignore the unwavering manipulation, oppression and disgusting behaviour of the Catholic Church has no love or compassion in their heart.

Reason I don’t believe God is real. The Catholic Church’s treatment of women and children to this day is deplorable. From covering up the sexual abuse of children to opposing the decriminalisation of homosexuality, it’s laughable that people still support the Catholic Church in Ireland. The Church resisted so many positive changes in Ireland from divorce, gay marriage, contraception, women in the civil service and abortion. The list goes on. Ireland would be a much better place without the presence of the Catholic Church.

Reason I did not chose to be baptised. As an adult, I cannot in conscience be part of an organisation run wholly by older, wealthy, white men whose conservative, traditional, right wing views continue to perpetuate hatred, homophobia and misogyny. Not only is the Bible a man made book by a group of politicians, aka a fairytale that controls the masses through fear of a vengeful god and an eternity of torture in hell, the completely disgusting, ABHORRENT actions of both clergymen and the bishops in abusing children and then covering it up and denying it is just too evil for words.
