Humphrey Murphy:
I understand your sentiments and agree with some of them. Finding a balance between the right to practise a religion and not imposing this religion on others can be difficult especially in a country where one religion dominates. The church has and continues to provide a valuable service in Ireland especially in the areas of education and health. However while I appreciate the right of a religion to have an input and participate in these areas, they should not be dominated by any religion. I do have concerns regarding the role of the church in education especially in national schools, while this role is essentially positive it has resulted in a relative absence of secular schools for those of different or no religious beliefs. Ultimately for any society to be just and effective, tolerance and equity is required not just for those that believe in a religion but also for those who ultimately believe in the role and capacity of their fellow man rather than a god.
