Reasons to Repeal

What are your Reasons to Repeal the 8th Amendment?

Atheist Ireland have asked our members and supporters their Reasons to Repeal the 8th Amendment. We will publish these over the coming weeks.

I am voting to Repeal The 8th Amendment because the civil law needs to be informed by the evidence we can see around us, rather than religious revelations. Abortion is a hugely complex issue and it will require complex legislation. This law will also need to evolve over time, to reflect the best medical evidence as our knowledge and technology continue to improve. That kind of work is exactly what a legislature is for. In contrast, the current situation suggests that every question in this area can be answered by a single sentence in our Constitution, which has been written to reflect a truth supposedly revealed to Roman Catholics by the creator of the universe. That is an absurd idea that has caused enormous damage to many people and we need to fix it immediately.

I will be voting Yes, voting to repeal the eight, because I believe it’s a woman’s right to decide what is best for her. I’m tired of seeing women being told what they Can’t do, what they are forbidden to do with their bodies, by men, by mysogynistic churches, and by politicians of all types.
For me it’s a simple case of human rights for women. It’s about women’s health, about women’s rights.
Repeal the eight, and give real choice and dignity to the lives of women.
